20세기 전반 예술가들은 창작의 자유로움을 마음껏 펼칠 수 있는 파리로 몰려들었다.

 정치, 종교, 전통을 강요하기보다는 개인의 자유를 최고의 가치로 여겼던 파리의

 분위기 때문이었다.

파리에서 활동한 다국적 예술가들은 서로 다른 문화를 가지고 있었지만 파리는 

그들의다양한 예술세계를 용광로처럼 녹여 하나로 통합시킨다. 당시 파리에서 

활동했던 예술가들을 가리켜 ‘에콜 드 파리’라고 불렀는데 그들은 미술을 

시처럼, 시를 삶처럼 이상화하는 것을 최고로 여겼다. 파리에서 활동

하던 ‘에콜 드 파리’ 화가들 중 모든 것을 시처럼 표현한 대표적인

 화가가 마르크 샤갈(1887~1985)이다.

당시 샤갈은 세잔을 동경하여 형태의 다양한 기하학적 해체를 철저히 관찰하려는

 그의 결심을 추측할수 있다. 바로 이 그림이 그 좋은 예의 하나이다. 

 다만 형태가 이렇게 세분 되면서도 유동적 이고 시원한 감을 주는것은 

코로니스트로서의 작가의 자질에 힘입은 바이다. 이와 같은 사실은 

같은 그림을 흑백사진으로 보면 더욱 뚜렷해진다. 다른 작품에도

 나타나지만 인물표정에 음산한 면이 떠올라와서 

금단을 범한 악의 주제가 드러날 것이다.​

러시아 태생으로 1910년에 파리로 간 샤갈은 맨 먼저 야수파의 강렬한 원색

 구가(仇家)에 충격을 받았다. 이어서 스는 입체주의의 영향도 빋게 된다. 

그러나 그는 그 자유롭고 다이나믹한 공간 취급의 방법을 자신의 환상의

 세계에 결부 시키는 형식으로 입체주의를 소화했을 뿐이었다.

 그러다가 그는 당시 레제, 들로네, 모딜리아니, 수틴 등이 살고

 있던 몽파르나스 근처의 라 디슈(벌집이라는 뜻)라 불리던 

보잘것 없는 공동 주택에 살면서 자신의 세계에 전념했다.

결혼식 예복을 입은 신부와 그 신부를 소중하게 안고 있는 신랑은 빠지지 않고 

그의 작품에 등장한다.샤갈은 신부인 벨라를 꼭 끌어안고 하늘을 날아다니는

 그곳이 파리의 하늘이든, 비테브스크의 하늘이든,성서 속의 이야기 속이든

, 단 한순간도 신랑은 신부를 놓지 않고 있다....그러나 샤갈의 현명하고 

아름다운 유대인 신부는 1944년 미국 망명 중에 전염병으로 세상을 

떠나게 된다. 그녀는 전쟁중에 변변한 치료도 받지 못하고 갑자기 

세상을 떠난다. 근 30년이 넘는 세월동안 작품세계의여신이며 

인생의 동반자인 벨라를 갑자기 잃은 샤갈은 9개월 동안이나

 붓을 들지 못할정도로 깊은 절망에 빠졌다.

방으로 뛰어 들어오는 여성의 동작에 따라 이 불가능한 도약이 그려졌으나, 

허공에 나타난 것처럼 그녀에게 입맞추는 목의 묘사법은 15년 후의 

<아크로바트>에 연결된다. 대상을 언제나 휘어지게 하지 않을 수

 없는 제작 충동이 이 커플로 하여금 약간 희화적 이긴 하나, 결코

 부자연스럽게는 보이지 않는 표현이 되게 하고있다.
