She put not on her robes of black,

Nor her robes of brown, 

But she put on robes of white,

To ride into Glasgow town.

And as she rode into Glasgow town,

The bailiff's wife and the provost's wife

For had I not slain my own wee babe

Then by and come the King himself, 

Looked up with a pitiful eye,

"Come down, come down, Mary Hamilton, 

Tonight you'll dine with me."

"Ah, hold your tongue, my sovereign liege,

And let your folly be;

For if you'd a mind to save my life

You'd never have shamed me here."

"Last night there were four Marys,

Tonight there'll be but three,

There was Mary Beaton, and Mary Seaton,

And Mary Carmichael, and me."



1963년 역사적인 Joan Baez의 데뷰앨범에 수록된 곡으로 영국 왕실의 

실화로 왕실 하녀가 왕의 아이를 낳은 Mary Hamilton이라는 궁녀가 

단두대에서 처형되기 전의 심리를 묘사한 곡이다. 담담한 목소리로 

슬픈 옛일을 노래하는 Jone Baez의 목소리가 마치 중세 유럽의 음유시인

같은 분위기가 풍긴다.
