Fairytale-Like Pictures Of Horses Living In Extreme Iceland Conditions

눈과 어름은 언제나 신령스러운 분위기를 자아낸다. 그래서인지 Iceland를 매혹적인 여행목적지로 만들어 주는 것 같다.
New York City에 기반을 두고 활동하고 있는 전문 사진작가이며 영화제작자인 Drew Doggett는 그의 최신 연작 사진 시리즈 'In the Realm of Legens'에서 이같은 마술의 단편을 포착하고자 시도하였으며, "대자연과 아름다운 말들과의 특별한 교호관계"에 중점을 두었다.
이번이 Doggett에게는 Iceland를 방문한 첫번째 기회였음에도, 섬의 여러곳을 누비면서 이 범상치 않은 장소와 가장 아름다운 자연을 찾아서 많은 사진을 찍었다.
"이 모든 작업을 하는 동안, 나는 지속적으로 거의 불가능에 가까운 이 지구의 땅을 찾아 다녔는데, Iceland가 그야말로 비현실적으로 특이한 곳이며, 야생마들이 이같이 특이하면서도 숨이 멎는 듯한 땽과 완벽하게 어울리는 존재였으며, 그 조화로움은 도저히 잊을 수가 없었다"고 술회하고 있다.
하지만 이 예술가가 동토의 땅에 가져다준 것은 단지 경치 뿐만이 아니다.
"여러가지 면에서, 나는 야생사진작가의 생애를 통해 Iceland에 몰입하게 되었는데, 내가 어린 시절부터 꿈꿔왔던 흥미 진진한 모험을 할 수 있었기 때문이다. Jules Verne 작의 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea'는 내가 반복해서 여러 번 읽은 책들 중의 하나인데, 내 생애 언젠가는 그와 같은 모혐을 하고 싶다는 모험심을 키웠다."고 말했다.
영화 속의 환상의 이야기를 제대로 포착하기란 쉬운 일이 아니다. 이 사진작가가 말하기를 그는 2주간의 동물 사진을 찍기 위해 여러 달의 계획을 세웠지만 몇번의 도전에 불과하여 기회가 많지 않았다고 한다.
"여기의 흔치 않은 조의 말들을 기록하는 일 말고도, Iceland의 예측불허의 일기가 이 연작 시리즈를 만드는데 가장 큰 도전이라고 할 수 있었다... 나는 내게 닥친 모든 자그마한 기회도 놓치지 않으려고 최선을 다했는데, 일순간에 비가 오거나 바람이 세차게 불어대면 휴식처를 찾기 바쁘게 만들기 때문이었다."
엉뚱기발하고 절정에 다다른 사진들을 보고난 후 Doggett이 얼마나 힘든 작업을 했는지 분명하게 보이게 될 것이다.
